2019 NCWA NATIONAL DUALS
THE GRAND NATIONAL TITLE HOPES BEGIN HERE
The 2019 NCWA National Duals is the springboard for a team’s national title contention. The NCWA has united its two championship events into a
single scoring system, the NCWA Championship Series, which is unique among all other major-college championship sports. The tournament has now gone to a selection format in which the top-16 teams across the country are selected by the National Dual Selection Committee made up of the
NCWA Executive Board and the 8 Conference Chairmen. This year, the winner of the National Duals will earn 20 team points which will transfer to the Grand National Championship Standings at the end of the National Tournament in March, with the second place team earning 19 points, third place 18, and so on down to 5 points for 16th place. The team points won at the National Duals will then be added to those earned in the individual brackets at the NCWA Championships in March to determine a true overall national-champion team while keeping intact the traditional individual championships that have been the NCWA’s hallmark season-ending event.
The NCWA was the first to use the new team scoring system at its 2014 championships. The new format is based upon recommended rule
changes being adopted by both the National Wrestling Coaches Association and the NCAA Wrestling Committee. Both associations will be
watching its use by the NCWA closely while studying it for their own future use.
Mesquite, Nevada and the West Coast Conference (WCC)
This is the first season for West Coast Conference (WCC) and the City of Mesquite to host the National Duals.
NEVER A REPEAT CHAMPION ... COULD LIBERTY DO IT THIS YEAR
As defending champion the Liberty Flames will try capture the title again in 2019. No team has repeated as champion in the tournament’s
Thirteen-year history. Grand Valley State won National Duals titles hosted by the NWCA in 2007 and 2008 before the tournament became an
official NCWA-championship event. Since then, Grand Valley State (2009), Marion Military Institute (2010), California Baptist (2011), Liberty University (2012), Lindenwood-St. Charles (2013), Grand Canyon (2014), Liberty University (2015), Central Florida (2016), and Emmanuel (2017) have
won dual championship titles. No team has won back to back championships in its current format. In spite of traveling out west, the Flames attempt
to surpass a field of past dual champions to accomplish the feat as Grand Valley State and either Central Florida or Apprentice
likely stand in their way.
THE BEST TEAMS ARE HERE:
Current teams with guaranteed bids are 5 of the top-6 from the 2018 National Duals including returning Champion Liberty University, 3rd Place Grand Valley State University, 4th Place Springfield Tech CC, 5th Place Central Florida, and 6th Place Apprentice School. The following schools have received the remaining 11 spots in the field: Grays Harbor College (WA), Toledo (OH), Maine, Richland (TX), UNLV, Dixie State, Colorado State, Washington State, Wayne State College (NE), and Cal-State Northridge. The only D2 program that will compete during the event is M.I.T.
